How to Foster the Human Centered Development of Analytics
In situations of high uncertainty and high human involvement, it can be difficult to implement analytical tools, on the other hand those tools can serve to reduce and define the uncertainty. To achieve this level of use the human actors involved need to be empowered to understand and utilise the data that they produce and use. This requires both learning and experiment in a safe and creative space as mathematical tools, data and humans come together.
Using examples from industry and research we will introduce the ideas, concepts and framework of HCA and explore how it relates to human centred design. Using the examples we will discuss what works and what doesn’t, and why that is, developing ideas around choosing the right structuring methods and analytical approaches for differing situations. Design is a key part of the process, and we will look at ways to keep in mind the iterative and empathetic journey that this helps to facilitate, while also looking at ways to integrate HCA into common working practices such as lean projects.
Please join us for what promises to be an interesting and informative session.
Dr Christina Phillips, Senior Lecturer, Business Analytics, Liverpool Business School, Liverpool John Moores University, Chair of the Business Analytics Educators Forum (BAEF), Co-chair Analytics Network (ORS), Director/Trustee at The OR Society.
This friendly discussion explores how data is transforming decision-making within financial services, from internal operations to external engagement and cross-sector collaboration. Led by Lauren Cassells (FCA & FinTech Scotland), Dr Emma Black (Cascade Cash Management) and Catherine Lindsay (Newcastle Strategic Solutions) will address how their organisations leverage operational and performance data to improve service delivery, enhance workforce planning, and support team development.
They’ll also examine the strategic use of external data to understand customer needs better, the growing role of “data translators” in bridging technical and business teams, and the challenges of making data actionable in complex markets. The session will close with insights into how collaboration beyond the financial sector can unlock new value and drive innovation.
Attendees will gain practical perspectives on using data more effectively, both within teams and across the wider ecosystem, to enable faster, smarter decisions.

Designing with Insight: Smart Requirement Gathering for Descriptive Data Products
Building effective descriptive data products, like dashboards, reports, and data visualisations, starts with one crucial step: gathering the right requirements. Without a clear understanding of what stakeholders need, we risk delivering insights that don’t inform, don’t inspire action, or worse, mislead.
In this short presentation, we’ll explore a framework you can use to ask the right questions, identify key users, and collect the information you need to translate business goals into data product requirements that deliver real value.

The Importance of Data Visualisation and Storytelling
Data is everywhere but how much of it is communicated effectively and do customers truly engage? Lots of work goes into the curation of data sets only for it to fall at the last hurdle as the key insights are lost through poor visualisation and storytelling. This session will cover some of the foundational concepts of data storytelling and data visualisation which are often overlooked.
- How important design thinking is in data visualisation
- How to make numbers resonate to their audience
- A framework for building best in class charts
- How to tell and sell your data story
